ChatGPT and Claude Users Can Now Authorize Cryptocurrency Transactions Through MoonPay's Vault

Through MoonPay's newly launched PayBox vault, users of ChatGPT and Claude can now authorize cryptocurrency acquisitions, swap tokens and execute crosschain transactions without surrendering custody of their digital assets.

PayBox, a payment vault recently introduced by MoonPay, enables users of ChatGPT and Claude to grant authorization to AI for purchasing cryptocurrency, swapping tokens and bridging assets directly within conversational interfaces while maintaining full custody of their digital holdings.

By connecting cryptocurrency wallets and preferred payment methods to ChatGPT or Claude, users can have these AI assistants prepare various transactions including token swaps, crosschain transfers and decentralized finance interactions through simple natural-language prompts. According to MoonPay, users maintain the ability to approve individual transactions using a passkey or configure spending limits that enable the AI to automatically execute specific actions.

According to MoonPay's announcement, PayBox employs multi-party computation alongside trusted execution environments to safeguard wallet keys, ensuring that neither the AI assistant nor MoonPay can independently gain access to user funds. The platform additionally provides users with the option to mandate approval for each individual transaction or permit AI to operate autonomously within predetermined spending and permission boundaries.

According to MoonPay, PayBox offers compatibility with multiple blockchains and various payment methods, including debit cards, bank accounts, Apple Pay and PayPal. The company also indicated that developers have the capability to integrate the payment vault into their proprietary AI applications by utilizing its software development kit.

Coinbase's x402 gains AI payments traction

The x402 open payment protocol, which was originally developed by Coinbase to enable AI agents to make internet-native payments, is also supported by PayBox. After being contributed to the Linux Foundation in April 2026, the protocol transitioned to governance as an open, vendor-neutral industry standard.

Throughout this year, Coinbase has maintained momentum in expanding the x402 ecosystem. The crypto exchange introduced tools in June that provide AI agents with the capability to accept USDC payments, execute crypto trades, discover paid services via an AI marketplace and handle high-frequency micropayments with greater efficiency.

During the earlier part of this year, Amazon Web Services incorporated x402 into its Bedrock AgentCore Payments service, while Fireblocks introduced an x402-compatible payments framework designed for AI agents and became a member of the x402 Foundation.

Adoption appears to be driving increased network activity. According to a June 3 report published by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis, agentic payments on Coinbase's Base network exceeded 100 million transactions within approximately nine months, demonstrating growing activity surrounding the protocol despite the fact that early usage was partially driven by speculative applications.

As of the time of writing, the protocol's public dashboard indicates more than 12.7 million transactions recorded over the past 30 days across participating services.
