AI Agents Integrated Into Coinbase's Slack and Email Systems During Testing Phase

CEO Brian Armstrong forecasts AI agents will soon exceed human employee numbers at Coinbase while also completing more blockchain transactions than people.

Brian Armstrong, the chief executive of Coinbase, revealed that his organization has begun experimenting with AI agents integrated into Slack and email platforms to support staff members with their daily responsibilities, marking another step in the company's ongoing initiative to incorporate artificial intelligence throughout its operations.

Through a Saturday post on the X platform, Armstrong disclosed that the cryptocurrency exchange has already put two AI agents into operation, both patterned after previous company executives, while expressing his belief that these AI agents might ultimately surpass the number of human workers employed at the firm.

"Soon, it will be easy for any employee to spin up a new agent for themselves or their team. I suspect we will have more agents than human employees at some point soon."

Leading technology corporations have eliminated thousands of positions throughout this year as they've expanded their dependence on artificial intelligence. Armstrong has been advocating for AI to handle more automated processes at Coinbase, declaring in September that his goal is for artificial intelligence to generate more than 50% of the company's programming code.

Just one month prior to that announcement, Coinbase revealed that one of its primary objectives involves converting its workforce of over 4,000 members into what it calls "AI-Natives."

Coinbase introduces AI agents Fred and Balaji

Among the AI agents is Fred, which takes its name from Fred Ehrsam, who co-founded Coinbase. Fred's function will be to act as the organization's "strategic executive agent," providing Coinbase personnel with assistance in strategic clarity and priority alignment while delivering feedback at an executive level.

The second agent is Balaji, characterized as the agent of chaos and creativity, which was designed based on the profile of Balaji Srinivasan, who previously held the position of chief technology officer at Coinbase.

Balaji's purpose involves questioning established assumptions and helping Coinbase staff members explore unconventional thinking approaches in a bid to "spark innovation."

The crypto exchange has also played a part in contributing to the emerging agentic AI movement, having introduced the x402 protocol designed for agentic AI payments operating on both cryptocurrency and fiat payment systems in May 2025.

AI agents tipped to play a big role in crypto

This development arrives during a period when the broader industry holds the conviction that AI agents are poised to emerge as the primary users of blockchain-based payment systems in the years ahead.

At the beginning of this month, Armstrong made a prediction that there will be "more AI agents transacting online than humans very soon," mirroring statements made by Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire in January when he suggested that "literally billions of AI agents" will be conducting transactions onchain within a timeframe of three to five years.

Changpeng Zhao, the former chief executive of Binance, also stated in January that cryptocurrency represents the "native currency for AI agents," which are expected to manage everything from purchasing tickets to settling bills without requiring credit cards.
