New Protocol Leadership Announced as Ethereum Foundation Achieves 'Glamsterdam' Goals

The Ethereum Foundation announced significant Glamsterdam achievements including establishing a 200 million gas limit floor, completing EIP-8037, and introducing new Protocol team leadership.

Multiple significant progress markers have been reached by the Ethereum Foundation for the upcoming Ethereum upgrade designated as "Glamsterdam," while simultaneously announcing the appointment of three new leaders for its Protocol team.

In a Monday blog post, the Ethereum Foundation disclosed that it had accomplished a "credible post-Glamsterdam target," setting a 200 million gas limit floor that will deliver a substantial speed enhancement to the network following the upgrade, compared to the present gas limit hovering around 60 million.

According to the Ethereum Foundation, "The immediate focus is shipping Glamsterdam," an upgrade initially planned for a June release but now anticipated to arrive at some point during the third quarter of 2026.

The primary objective of Glamsterdam centers on scaling Ethereum's layer-1 chain through reorganization of the network's transaction processing methods and database management capabilities, "fundamentally updating how Ethereum creates and verifies blocks," as described on the Ethereum website.

Additionally, the Ethereum Foundation continues its preparation work for Hegotà, which represents the subsequent major upgrade, while also progressing the Strawmap, representing its quantum-ready roadmap strategy.

During an interop event held in Svalbard, Norway, the Foundation stated that "Glamsterdam devnets are now live, and scoping for Hegotà is well underway."

Finalizing ePBS and smarter data storage

The stabilization of enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (ePBS) was also confirmed by the EF, representing a system designed to enable validators to delegate their block-building responsibilities to a group of specialized builders.

This new enshrined iteration integrates the separation directly into the foundational rules of Ethereum with reduced dependence on external relays, providing the network with additional time to process larger blocks in a secure manner.

Additionally, EIP-8037 has reached finalization, introducing more intelligent pricing mechanisms for data storage. This proposal elevates the cost associated with state creation operations, preventing excessive state growth when operating under elevated block gas limits.

Changes in EF Protocol leadership

A "start of a leadership transition" within the Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster was also announced by the Foundation, introducing Will Corcoran, Kev Wedderburn, and Fredrik as the newly appointed leads.

According to the announcement, Ethereum developers Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko are departing from the Foundation, while Alex Stokes will be taking a sabbatical.

On Monday, Corcoran stated on X, "There's a new chapter starting for the Protocol cluster. We're welcoming new leads and coordinators, and continuing our work toward Glamsterdam, Hegotà, and the Strawmap."

Monnot commented, "Making Ethereum's unique features more available to users today is on my mind; so is participating in the plurality of ways that Ethereum gets built."
