European Central Bank Unveils Pontes Platform for Tokenized Asset Settlement Using Central Bank Currency

Pontes, the ECB's new platform, enables wholesale settlement of tokenized assets using central bank money rather than stablecoins, with complete rollout targeted for 2028.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has introduced Pontes, a new platform designed to enable financial institutions to complete wholesale tokenized asset transactions using central bank money, offering a viable alternative to privately-issued settlement assets like stablecoins.

On Monday, the ECB unveiled Pontes as a key component of the Eurosystem's comprehensive approach to tokenized finance. The platform currently provides an essential suite of services at launch, with complete deployment anticipated to occur by 2028.

The process of tokenization converts assets into digital tokens, commonly utilizing distributed ledger technology (DLT) networks. According to the ECB, this approach has the potential to accelerate wholesale transactions and enhance efficiency by consolidating issuance, trading, settlement, custody and servicing within a unified platform, while facilitating automation capabilities through the use of smart contracts.

Pontes brings the stability and trust of central bank money to the European tokenised finance ecosystem. It will give an important advantage to help it scale.

The development of Pontes is rooted in the Eurosystem's 2024 experimental trials focused on settling transactions based on DLT using central bank money. According to the ECB, those who participated in the tests highlighted the availability of a risk-free settlement asset as a critical factor for broader acceptance and implementation of tokenized finance solutions.

In parallel, the Eurosystem is working on Appia, a related project that investigates an integrated framework for financial services built on DLT, with a comprehensive blueprint anticipated for completion by 2028.
