August sees Robinhood crypto trading jump 61% month-over-month despite 38% annual decline

Of the total August cryptocurrency volume at Robinhood, Bitstamp represented $10.1 billion, whereas activity on the Robinhood application decreased 46% compared to the same period last year.

In August, Robinhood experienced a 61% increase in cryptocurrency trading volume compared to the previous month, reaching $17.5 billion, although this figure represents a 38% decline when compared to the same month in the prior year.

According to the online brokerage's monthly operating report for August 2026, which was released on Thursday, the crypto exchange Bitstamp was responsible for $10.1 billion of this total volume, with the remaining $7.4 billion coming from the Robinhood application itself.

The volume generated through Bitstamp showed a 53% increase compared to July's figures but experienced a 30% decrease on a year-over-year basis, whereas trading volume through the Robinhood app saw a 72% surge month-over-month while declining 46% when measured against August 2025 levels.

The acquisition of Bitstamp by Robinhood, which was completed in June 2025, has made the crypto exchange the primary contributor to the company's overall cryptocurrency volume during the second quarter as well. Out of Robinhood's total $40 billion in volume, Bitstamp contributed $22 billion, while the Robinhood app contributed $18 billion.

During the second quarter, Robinhood saw its cryptocurrency transaction revenue decrease by 38% on a year-over-year basis, dropping to $100 million from approximately $160 million in the same period the previous year. However, expansion in event contracts, options trading and equities trading more than compensated for this decline, enabling the brokerage to achieve record-breaking quarterly revenue and earnings figures.

The monthly report for August also noted that cryptocurrency volume originating from the Robinhood Chain was excluded from the reported figures.
