US Charges Await Crypto Ponzi Scheme Suspect Following Extradition from Fiji

Following his deportation from Fiji, Edward Zimbardi now confronts 25 federal charges connected to a purported cryptocurrency Ponzi operation that accumulated more than $165 million.

Following his deportation from Fiji, Edward Zimbardi, who prosecutors claim orchestrated a cryptocurrency Ponzi operation worth $165 million, has been brought back to American soil to answer to federal charges including fraud and money laundering.

The US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia announced on Monday that Fijian law enforcement deported Zimbardi this past Friday through a coordinated effort involving the FBI and the State Department. His initial court appearance was set to take place before a federal magistrate judge in Los Angeles, where prosecutors planned to request his continued detention while awaiting legal proceedings in Georgia.

Rather than investing in advertising packages as promised, Zimbardi is accused of funneling more than $34 million into high-risk foreign currency trading operations, utilizing funds from newer investors to compensate earlier participants, and diverting at least $10 million toward personal expenditures, which included purchasing a residence, high-end automobiles, and alimony payments.

On July 8, Zimbardi was charged in an indictment featuring 12 counts of wire fraud, 12 counts of money laundering, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. According to prosecutors, he escaped to Fiji upon becoming aware of the FBI's investigation into his activities and stayed in the island nation for over a year.
