Two Additional Senior Figures Exit Ethereum Foundation

The nonprofit Ethereum Foundation has lost two more key researchers, Julian Ma and Carl Beek, pushing the organization's total count of significant exits to a minimum of eight throughout 2026.

On Monday, the Ethereum Foundation experienced the departure of two leading researchers, pushing the count of significant exits from the nonprofit to no fewer than eight over the past several months.

Two Ethereum Foundation researchers, Julian Ma and Carl Beek, concluded their time with the organization after serving for four and seven years respectively.

During his tenure, Ma made significant contributions to Ethereum's censorship-resistant features and worked on cross-layer bridge algorithms and strategic planning, whereas Beek played a crucial role in the initial design work for the Beacon Chain, the system that brought proof-of-stake consensus to the blockchain network.

The departures of Ma and Beek contribute to an ongoing exodus of prominent figures from the Ethereum Foundation throughout this year, with the total now reaching five senior developers and researchers who have exited during the month of May alone.

In a post shared on X, Ma explained that his decision to leave the Ethereum Foundation stemmed from a desire to concentrate on product development and growth-oriented work, noting that while the organization "is an amazing place but not right for my next steps."

In his own X post, Beek revealed that his departure would take effect on May 29 and that he planned to dedicate time to his wife and their 1-month-old child for the foreseeable future.

In the previous year, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, revealed substantial changes to the Foundation's leadership structure along with a fresh strategic direction for the organization, moves that came as a response to concerns raised by Ethereum's user base regarding how the blockchain was managing its long-term development roadmap, with Buterin seeking to attract fresh talent to the Foundation in order to rebuild the protocol for enhanced and accelerated throughput capabilities.

The Ethereum Foundation was contacted by Cointelegraph for a statement on these developments.

Recent Ethereum Foundation member resignations

During the earlier part of this month, the Ethereum Foundation confirmed that Barnabé Monnot and Tim Beiko, who served as leaders of the organization's Protocol Cluster team, were departing, and simultaneously announced that Alex Stokes, the team's third lead, would be taking a sabbatical leave.

During April, Josh Stark, a prominent researcher and project manager within the organization, revealed his departure from the Ethereum Foundation, an announcement that came just one day following Trent Van Epps, another Ethereum Foundation contributor, making public his own resignation.

Back in February, Tomasz Stanczak made the announcement that he would be stepping away from his position as the organization's co-executive director.
