Swiss regulator greenlights nation's first retail-accessible spot Bitcoin ETF

The Bitcoin Fund ETF from BIT Asset Management is set to launch on the SIX Swiss Exchange next month, though availability will be limited exclusively to Swiss investors.

FINMA, the Swiss financial market regulator, has given its blessing to the country's inaugural exchange-traded fund operating under Swiss law that enables everyday retail investors to obtain direct Bitcoin exposure.

BIT Asset Management announced on Thursday that its Bitcoin Fund ETF (BBIT) is scheduled to commence trading operations on the SIX Swiss Exchange next month in November. The investment vehicle maintains direct Bitcoin holdings and has received authorization for public distribution exclusively within Switzerland's borders.

"Most bitcoin products listed in Europe today are exchange-traded products (ETPs), which are debt instruments that carry issuer risk," said BIT Asset Management.

In contrast, the Bitcoin Fund ETF operates as a Swiss collective investment scheme, ensuring that investor assets are maintained separately from the fund management company's holdings and are "ring-fenced" to protect investors, according to the company's statement.

FINMA has classified the fund within Switzerland's "other funds for alternative investments" category that comes with particular risk designations. The regulator indicated that additional fund providers have similarly filed applications seeking approval for Bitcoin ETFs.

Although FINMA has permitted funds that primarily allocate capital across a diversified basket of cryptocurrencies beginning in 2021, this marks the inaugural instance where FINMA has granted approval to a fund exclusively dedicated to Bitcoin investments, pointing to the digital asset's established trading history and substantially higher trading volume relative to alternative cryptocurrencies.

Nevertheless, the regulator emphasized that Bitcoin continues to exhibit significant volatility characteristics even when investors access it through a regulated and approved ETF structure.
