Strategy and Partners Commit $15M Fund for Bitcoin Quantum Defense
Led by Strategy and BlackRock, a newly formed consortium has committed $15 million in funding to protect the Bitcoin network against potential threats from quantum computing advances.

The Bitcoin Security Consortium has been launched by Michael Saylor's Strategy, bringing together a coalition of financial institutions and Bitcoin-focused companies dedicated to ensuring the Bitcoin network's long-term protection against quantum threats.
According to a Thursday press release from Strategy, the consortium has committed a combined total of $15 million to be distributed over the coming three years, with funds directed toward supporting developers who are working to fortify the Bitcoin network against potential quantum computing advancements.
The consortium's founding member roster includes Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets and Galaxy. Coordination of the consortium's daily operations will fall to Mike Schmidt, who is volunteering his services and currently holds the position of executive director at Brink, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting open-source Bitcoin developers.
A day earlier on Wednesday, Galaxy Digital announced its commitment of up to $5 million in grant funding for developers focused on Bitcoin's quantum security initiatives, while also establishing a council composed of quantum-advisory specialists tasked with investigating quantum-resistant migration solutions.
The Bitcoin community has shown increasing concern regarding quantum security, although opinions vary widely on when a quantum breakthrough might materialize. Blockstream CEO Adam Back stated in November 2025 that Bitcoin would not face any significant quantum threat for a minimum of 20 to 40 years.
Conversely, investment manager Bernstein released an April report projecting that Bitcoin has approximately three to five years to implement a post-quantum security upgrade.
Robert Mitchnick, BlackRock's global head of digital assets, expressed appreciation for the "incredibly important work" performed by Bitcoin core developers, noting that the asset management company was delighted to provide "significant additional funding available to support Bitcoin's long-term security needs."
