Standard Chartered: Binance Security Breach May Drive DEX Adoption

Geoffrey Kendrick of Standard Chartered suggests the security incident could speed up migration to decentralized platforms and bolster his prediction of UNI token hitting $100 by 2030.

A migration toward decentralized exchanges in cryptocurrency trading could gain momentum following the Binance security breach, potentially providing long-term advantages to Uniswap, according to Geoffrey Kendrick, who serves as Standard Chartered's global head of digital assets research.

Through an email correspondence provided to Cointelegraph, Kendrick indicated the security incident is likely to push decentralized exchange market share higher in comparison to centralized trading venues, although he advised investors to allow sufficient time for the market effects of the Binance incident to fully materialize before taking action.

I would encourage investors to re-engage with Uniswap. The decentralized exchange (DEX) has never had any exploits, and the hack of the largest centralized exchange (CEX), in Binance, should see the ratio of DEX to CEX trading continue to increase.

Data compiled by CoinGecko research indicates that during the second quarter of 2026, the trading volume ratio between the top 10 spot DEX platforms and CEX platforms stood at 23.5%, representing an increase of 2.1 percentage points compared to the first quarter of 2026.

According to Kendrick, he maintains his price projection of $100 for Uniswap (UNI) by the year 2030, while noting the Binance security breach represents "another reason why that forecast may end up being too low."

This projection is based on Standard Chartered's previous analysis suggesting that total value locked within DeFi protocols could climb to $2.7 trillion by 2030, positioning Uniswap as a primary trading destination for tokenized assets.

Addressing the wider ramifications of the Binance security incident, Kendrick indicated his expectation for continued downward price movements in the immediate future.

According to Cointelegraph's reporting, cryptocurrency markets saw further losses early Friday in the aftermath of the Binance breach, with BNB experiencing a decline exceeding 8% during the 24-hour period and Bitcoin trading in the vicinity of $77,000. Tokens associated with decentralized finance protocols also experienced losses. Aave's AAVE token decreased 11.3% to reach $118.54, while Uniswap's UNI token fell 10.4% to settle at $6.48, based on CoinGecko data.

Only after assets are unfrozen and more detail of the hack emerges will we find a new base.
