OpenAssets and Itaú Partner for Brazil's Digital Asset Tokenization Trial

Brazil's largest private bank Itaú has teamed up with OpenAssets for an ANBIMA pilot program that explores tokenization of fixed-income products and investment funds through blockchain technology.

Latin America's biggest private sector banking institution, Itaú, has formed a collaboration with OpenAssets, a provider of digital asset infrastructure solutions, to take part in an industry-driven pilot program examining the tokenization of fixed-income financial instruments and investment funds within the Brazilian market.

The Brazilian Financial and Capital Markets Association (ANBIMA) spearheads this initiative, which focuses on testing the issuance processes, trading mechanisms, and settlement procedures for capital markets products utilizing distributed ledger technology (DLT).

Based on the announcement released on Tuesday, both organizations will work on developing technical proofs of concept while evaluating the operational requirements, compliance standards, and technological infrastructure necessary for tokenized financial assets. The use cases under examination include debentures and various investment fund structures.

The tokenization infrastructure platform will be supplied by OpenAssets, whereas Itaú will bring its extensive capital markets knowledge and experience to the table as both companies examine the potential operational framework for tokenized assets within established institutional environments.

Back in April, ANBIMA announced its selection of 20 use cases for this pilot program, choosing them from a pool of 39 proposals that were submitted by over 50 participating organizations, including banks, asset management firms, and technology companies. These experimental tests are taking place on a private, permissioned distributed ledger technology network within a controlled simulated environment that does not involve actual financial transactions.

The total value of tokenized real-world assets deployed across public blockchain networks has experienced significant growth, more than doubling during the past year. The figure has climbed from approximately $18.9 billion in August 2025 to reach $38.3 billion as of today, based on data provided by RWA.xyz. United States Treasury debt represents the dominant category within this space, comprising over $16 billion of the total.
