Nine Cryptocurrency Exchange Platforms Shuttered by Russian Authorities in Moscow

Nine unlicensed cryptocurrency exchange operations have been dismantled in Moscow by Russian authorities, with security services claiming the platforms facilitated the international transfer of fraud-related funds through call centers based in Ukraine.

Nine unlicensed cryptocurrency exchange operations operating in Moscow have been raided by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) amid allegations of money laundering activities connected to fraud revenues that officials have tied to scam call centers operating from Ukraine.

According to a Friday official statement, the security agency apprehended over 20 staff members working at the Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City) during an enforcement action focused on dismantling networks suspected of facilitating the overseas transfer of illegal funds using cryptocurrency assets.

According to the FSB's claims, these exchange platforms were converting funds obtained through phone scam operations targeting Russian citizens into digital currencies, which were subsequently transferred to accounts controlled by what the agency characterized as Ukrainian coordinators.

The enforcement action was executed through a collaborative effort between the FSB and Russia's Interior Ministry. According to officials, couriers in the 18 to 25 age bracket were responsible for collecting physical cash from fraud victims and transporting it to the exchange locations for cryptocurrency conversion. The FSB reported that young individuals from various Russian regions were brought in to staff these exchange operations despite possessing minimal knowledge of financial matters.

The Interior Ministry has initiated a criminal probe into large-scale fraudulent activities, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years imprisonment under the Russian legal framework. According to the FSB, efforts are ongoing to locate additional victims and determine possible restitution arrangements.
