This development comes amid increasing pressure from British legislators and government authorities to restrict or impose a moratorium on cryptocurrency-based political contributions nationwide.

Nigel Farage, who leads the Reform Party in the United Kingdom, acquired real estate worth 1.4 British pounds ($1.8 million) following his receipt of a 5 million pound ($6.7 million) "personal gift" provided by cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne.

According to Sky News, the property transaction was finalized in May 2024, just a few weeks prior to Farage's public declaration that he would be a candidate in the upcoming general elections.

A parliamentary investigation in the UK is now targeting Farage regarding the 5 million pound contribution, with detractors of the politician asserting it should have been properly declared and formally registered following his assumption of office.

Both Farage and the Reform Party assert that there was no violation of regulations. According to Farage, the gift was obtained prior to his entry into parliamentary office, thus exempting it from identical disclosure obligations.

This investigation comes after several months of British legislators and governmental authorities calling for a prohibition on cryptocurrency-based political contributions due to ethical considerations and heightened regulatory examination of politicians who accept digital currency for campaign financing or as personal contributions.

British authorities and legislators focus on cryptocurrency political contributions

During February 2025, the chair of the United Kingdom's Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, Matt Western, called upon legislators to institute a temporary prohibition on cryptocurrency donations made to political organizations and individual politicians.

The primary justification Western provided for implementing the ban centered on apprehensions regarding foreign governments exerting influence over UK electoral processes and political affairs through their financial contributions.

As the security environment worsens and the UK's military role in Europe grows, the value of influencing the UK's political positions, for example, on Ukraine, or US-EU relations, is likely to increase.

In March, the British government moved forward with a legislative measure designed to temporarily prohibit political cryptocurrency contributions, acting upon the recommendations put forth by Western alongside findings from an independent investigation examining the risks associated with foreign political donations.

Nevertheless, the proposed legislation still requires passage through both parliamentary chambers in the UK and must obtain formal approval from King Charles III prior to becoming officially enacted as law.

We will act decisively to protect our democracy.
