Nigel Farage Under Investigation for Unreported $7M Cryptocurrency Donation
British Reform Party chief Nigel Farage is under investigation by parliamentary authorities regarding a multi-million pound donation from cryptocurrency tycoon Christopher Harborne that wasn't disclosed prior to his 2024 election to Parliament.
Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, is under investigation by parliamentary standards authorities regarding allegations that he did not properly disclose a 5 million pound ($6.7 million) donation he received from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne.
According to a BBC report published on Wednesday, the UK Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has initiated an investigation to determine whether Farage violated House of Commons regulations by failing to register the substantial payment.
In his defense, Farage has maintained that he had "no obligation" to disclose the donation from the prominent Reform party supporter, noting that he received the funds prior to winning his seat in the Commons during the 2024 elections. However, his detractors contend that he should have registered the financial contribution following his election as a member of parliament.
The Conservative party submitted a formal complaint to the parliamentary standards watchdog requesting an investigation into the matter, the BBC has confirmed. Additionally, the Conservatives brought the issue to the attention of the Electoral Commission, which is currently deliberating whether to initiate a formal probe into the donation.
This investigation intensifies the examination of Farage's financial connections to cryptocurrency-related supporters and enterprises, particularly as British legislators and regulatory bodies increase their vigilance regarding the influence of digital currency funding in political affairs.
This latest development follows by one month the UK Liberal Democrats' request that the Financial Conduct Authority investigate potential violations of market regulations by Farage, stemming from his appearance in a Stack BTC promotional video while maintaining a financial interest in the enterprise.
Farage had previously made public a $286,000 equity investment in the company following his acquisition of a 6.31% ownership stake through his media entity Thorn In The Side during March.
UK lawmakers mull halt to political crypto donations
Cryptocurrency contributions to political organizations have faced increasing examination throughout the United Kingdom.
In 2025, Farage's Reform UK became the first political party in the country to begin accepting cryptocurrency donations. The party recently made public a $4 million contribution from Harborne during the fourth quarter of 2025, coming after a record-breaking $12 million donation in the quarter preceding it.
At present, cryptocurrency donations to political entities remain lawful in the UK, provided they comply with permissible standards outlined in Electoral Commission guidance. Nevertheless, several parliamentary committees have advocated for suspending such contributions.
The Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy issued a recommendation to the UK government on March 18, calling for an immediate moratorium on cryptocurrency contributions to political parties. The committee emphasized that such a pause should remain in effect until the Electoral Commission develops statutory guidance in advance of the next general election, scheduled to occur no later than August 2029.
The committee additionally advocated for establishing a Political Finance Enforcement Unit and recommended lowering the minimum declaration threshold for political contributions from $14,900 down to $668. Their recommendations highlighted increasing threats from foreign states and attempts to exert influence over the UK's stances on crucial matters, including relationships with the US, the European Union and Ukraine.
Three weeks prior to this recommendation, Matt Western, who chairs the committee, called upon the government to implement a temporary suspension on cryptocurrency donations to political parties, expressing concerns about foreign interference risks, as Cointelegraph reported on Feb. 26.
