The head of digital assets at Franklin Templeton predicts that the emerging economy of autonomous AI agents will drive significant growth in blockchain networks facilitating machine-to-machine micropayment transactions.

The leading executive overseeing digital assets and innovation at investment management powerhouse Franklin Templeton has identified artificial intelligence (AI) agents as the forthcoming "killer" application for blockchain technology and digital currencies.
In a Wednesday post shared on the X platform, Sandy Kaul outlined how the emerging AI agent economy will substantially boost the demand for blockchain protocols that facilitate machine-to-machine micropayments, noting that traditional card networks fall short for agentic payment systems because of their elevated transaction costs and prolonged settlement periods.

According to Kaul, blockchain platforms including Aptos, Solana and the BNB Chain are better positioned to serve the agentic economy, given their ability to finalize transactions within seconds, which stands in stark contrast to the Visa network's one-to-three business-day settlement timeframe.
Last Wednesday saw the publication of a collaborative report from payments industry leader Visa and investment thesis platform Artemis, which contended that conventional card systems designed for infrequent human transactions are inadequate for AI agents, which require infrastructure featuring near-zero transaction fees and accelerated settlement processes to make agentic micropayments economically feasible.
In March, both Visa's cryptocurrency division and Stripe-backed Tempo unveiled AI-powered tools. The solution from Visa enables AI agents to execute same-day payment transactions.
Certain machine payment protocols are already demonstrating encouraging indicators of market adoption. According to the joint report from Visa and Artemis, the x402 payment protocol created by Coinbase has handled $15 million in adjusted volume spanning more than 109 million adjusted transactions since its May 2025 launch.
