Head of Poland's Olympic Committee faces criminal charges in crypto exchange investigation

The president of Poland's Olympic Committee has been charged by Polish prosecutors as part of an investigation connected to the now-defunct cryptocurrency platform Zondacrypto.
Law enforcement authorities took Radosław Piesiewicz, the president of the committee, into custody as part of the ongoing Zondacrypto investigation, according to an announcement made Thursday on X by Poland's Justice Minister and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek.
In a subsequent statement, Żurek revealed that prosecutors have brought charges against Piesiewicz under two separate sections of Poland's Penal Code, with accusations centered on influence peddling and showing preference to certain creditors over others during a period of insolvency.
Reports from TVP World, a local media outlet, indicate that the accusations involve Piesiewicz successfully withdrawing all of his personal investments from Zondacrypto at a time when thousands of other users were unable to access their funds. The cryptocurrency exchange had entered into a general sponsorship agreement with the Polish Olympic Committee in October 2025.
The detention of Piesiewicz represents one of the initial arrests made during the course of the Zondacrypto investigation. The cryptocurrency exchange halted all trading operations in April following a severe liquidity crisis, occurring approximately at the same time that the platform's then-CEO Przemysław Kral publicly stated that the company was unable to gain access to a digital wallet containing approximately 4,500 Bitcoin due to the absence of the necessary private keys.
According to reports, Kral has been charged with involvement in large-scale fraudulent activities and is currently working alongside investigators with the goal of securing a lighter sentence.
