Global Operation Led by Chainalysis Identifies 7,700 Suspect Accounts in Child Exploitation Investigation
A comprehensive investigation known as Operation Lighthouse examined over 29,000 cryptocurrency addresses and digital identifiers linked to the distribution of child sexual abuse material.
In a coordinated global initiative spearheaded by blockchain analytics company Chainalysis, investigators flagged more than 7,700 accounts suspected of having connections to child sexual abuse material (CSAM), the firm announced.
In a press statement released on Tuesday and provided to Cointelegraph, the firm revealed that Operation Lighthouse examined a total of 29,120 cryptocurrency addresses and digital identifiers that were tied to more than 100 platforms, forums and distribution networks trafficking in CSAM operating on both the surface web and dark web.
Additionally, the investigative effort produced 14,300 leads for further investigation spanning 11 cryptocurrency exchanges and payment service providers, and identified suspects located in 125 countries worldwide. The pool of identified suspects included 16 individuals who were registered sex offenders.
Tom McLouth, who serves as senior intelligence analyst at Chainalysis, revealed that among those identified in the suspect pool were members of the military, officers from law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals and educators, with some individuals having positions that granted them direct contact with children.

The intensive multi-day collaborative effort took place at the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance facilities located in New York following several months of data enrichment work. The operation assembled law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions, private sector partners and specialized nonprofit organizations, with participants including Europol, the UK National Crime Agency, Binance, Coinbase, Block and the Internet Watch Foundation.
Those participating in the operation utilized blockchain intelligence tools to generate investigative leads that would support subsequent legal proceedings and case building. According to Chainalysis, the findings from the operation are anticipated to result in arrests, criminal prosecutions and the disruption of suspect accounts.
Crypto firms expand efforts against child exploitation
The completion of Operation Lighthouse comes after previous initiatives by cryptocurrency companies and child-protection organizations to broaden the scope of intelligence sharing regarding cryptocurrency transactions connected to exploitation activities. Europol emphasized that collaborative action is critical given that perpetrators take advantage of financial services, payment processing systems and internet platforms.
Among the cryptocurrency exchanges that participated in Lighthouse was Binance, which revealed a collaborative partnership with the nonprofit organization Stop The Traffik in July. The exchange stated that the nonprofit would supply intelligence, training resources and analytical insights designed to enhance its capabilities for detecting and investigating cryptocurrency transactions associated with human trafficking and child exploitation.
The use of blockchain tracing technology has played a role in previous law enforcement actions related to CSAM investigations. In 2019, the US Justice Department made public the dismantling of Welcome to Video, which authorities characterized at that time as the most extensive darknet marketplace for child sexual exploitation material based on content volume.
Law enforcement officials utilized Bitcoin payment tracing to pinpoint the location of the website's server in South Korea and successfully identify the site's administrator. The resulting investigation culminated in the arrest and charging of 337 users, the rescue of a minimum of 23 victims and the confiscation of approximately eight terabytes of exploitative material.
According to Chainalysis, investigators employed the company's software tools to conduct analysis of the cryptocurrency transactions and create detailed maps identifying the site's users and content contributors.
