Cryptocurrency Markets Shaken by Alleged Binance Security Breach as BNB Plunges 7%, Bitcoin Dips

Major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ether experienced significant declines as the overall crypto market dropped 3.3%, driven by concerns over suspicious transfers totaling billions from wallets associated with Binance.

Digital currency markets experienced a significant downturn on Thursday following emerging reports of what could be a multibillion-dollar security breach targeting Binance-associated wallets, causing investor panic that drove BNB down more than 7% and triggered widespread losses across the market.

The dramatic market decline occurred alongside emerging reports detailing suspicious asset movements from wallets connected to Binance. Blockchain security company Blockaid documented suspicious transfers totaling approximately $3.3 billion, while intelligence platform Arkham Intelligence monitored roughly $5.84 billion worth of assets within wallets designated as "binance-hacker-1029," although neither sum has been verified as the actual amount stolen.

The BNB Chain's native cryptocurrency BNB was changing hands around $702, representing a 7.2% decline over the preceding 24 hours, based on CoinGecko data available at the time of writing. Bitcoin experienced a 3.1% decrease to approximately $78,674, whereas Ether registered a 4% decline to roughly $2,263. The aggregate cryptocurrency market valuation decreased by 3.3% to approximately $2.73 trillion, even as 24-hour trading activity surged nearly 29% to reach $89.4 billion.

Binance acknowledged it was examining a possible security breach and emphasized that customer funds remained "completely safe." Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle confirmed they had frozen more than $2.3 billion in stablecoins connected to the security incident.
