Crypto Biz: $116M Bitcoin hack sparks self-custody debate
Self-custody faces renewed examination following a $116 million Bitcoin wallet breach, while ETF capital flows strengthen, Strategy plans additional BTC acquisitions and mining firms pursue multi-billion dollar AI partnerships.

The Bitcoin community finds itself revisiting a longstanding question following a hardware wallet breach that resulted in $116 million in losses: Does the responsibility of managing your own private keys justify the associated risks? In the aftermath of this security incident, US spot Bitcoin ETFs witnessed their most substantial capital inflows since April, leading Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas to speculate whether such security incidents might gradually drive more market participants away from self-custody solutions and into ETF products.
In other developments across the industry, Strategy is gearing up to restart its Bitcoin acquisition program following an unusual period of asset sales, Riot Platforms appears poised to convert its mining operations into what reports suggest is a $9 billion AI-related transaction, and Trump Media is reconsidering its cryptocurrency treasury approach following a $238 million loss during the second quarter.
Strategy CEO says company will resume Bitcoin accumulation this year
According to Strategy CEO Phong Le, the firm intends to restart its Bitcoin accumulation efforts in the coming months, aiming to strengthen its long-term strategic position after a handful of modest sales generated questions about its previously steadfast "never sell" policy.
In comments to FOX Business, Le disclosed that Strategy acquired approximately 175,000 BTC while selling around 7,000 BTC throughout this year — representing roughly 25 times more purchasing activity than selling. The firm currently maintains a position exceeding 840,000 BTC, positioning it as the largest institutional Bitcoin holder, though it has executed Bitcoin sales on four separate occasions since May, with the most recent transaction involving 1,690 BTC to fund preferred dividends, share buybacks and its dollar reserve requirements.
These transactions have brought attention to the conflicting priorities Strategy must navigate as it attempts to maintain its Bitcoin accumulation approach while meeting responsibilities to both common and preferred equity holders. The treasury strategy has also encountered difficulties. Data from Novaque Research indicates that when these companies see their valuations fall below Bitcoin net asset value, capital raising efforts become progressively more dilutive and the overall financing mechanism becomes more challenging to maintain.
Bitcoin ETF demand rebounds as self-custody risks come into focus
Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States drew approximately $1 billion in net capital inflows throughout the week, demonstrating revitalized institutional appetite even while Bitcoin's price stays relatively muted and a significant hardware wallet security breach draws renewed attention to the dangers inherent in self-custody approaches.
Eric Balchunas, an ETF analyst at Bloomberg, characterized it as the third-strongest week since October, a timeframe he referenced as Bitcoin's "silent IPO," terminology made popular by investor Jordi Visser. This hypothesis suggests that early Bitcoin holders have been liquidating their positions into expanding ETF and institutional demand, generating sufficient supply to suppress Bitcoin's price despite new capital flowing into the marketplace.
The recovery in inflows also came on the heels of a Coldcard hardware wallet security vulnerability tied to defective key generation that resulted in approximately $116 million in Bitcoin being stolen. Balchunas suggested the episode might eventually strengthen the attractiveness of ETFs among market participants worried about self-custody dangers, referencing post-incident inflows as a potential, albeit unconfirmed, correlation.
He emphasized that correlation does not imply causation, but noted that "long-term I can't imagine there aren't some who migrate over."
Anthropic reportedly struck a $9 billion compute deal with Bitcoin miner Riot
Reports indicate Anthropic has finalized a $9 billion agreement with Riot Platforms for 191 megawatts of power capacity from the Bitcoin mining company's Texas facility, underscoring how electricity access is becoming progressively more valuable as artificial intelligence data centers encounter capacity limitations.
Riot announced it has locked in a 20-year contract to deliver 191 megawatts from its Rockdale facility to a "leading frontier AI" enterprise, which Bloomberg sources identified as Anthropic. The transaction comes after Anthropic's $19 billion TeraWulf data center agreement and positions Riot among an expanding roster of Bitcoin mining operations diversifying into AI, including Bitdeer, CleanSpark, MARA Holdings, Core Scientific, Hut 8 and IREN.
Riot's stock price declined 5.4% on Monday before surging 21% in overnight trading and has gained approximately 50% year-to-date. The fourth-largest Bitcoin mining operation commands a $7.33 billion market capitalization, while analysts at Bernstein suggested collaborative arrangements between AI firms and mining companies could help resolve the power shortage limiting data center growth.
Trump Media to revamp crypto treasury strategy after $238 million Q2 loss
Trump Media announced plans to overhaul its digital asset treasury approach following unrealized losses on cryptocurrency and securities that contributed to a $238 million second-quarter net loss for the company, underscoring the balance-sheet dangers associated with corporate cryptocurrency positions.
The firm disclosed $190.4 million in unrealized losses spanning its digital assets, and pledged digital assets and equity securities during the second quarter. Its holdings stood at 9,477.16 Bitcoin as of June 30, down from 9,542.16 in the previous quarter. During July, the company liquidated $159.6 million in Bitcoin-related securities and deployed the proceeds to acquire additional Bitcoin, increasing its position to approximately 14,139 BTC valued at $890.5 million by July 31.
Trump Media cautioned that attempts to generate supplementary income from its Bitcoin position could subject it to counterparty risk, especially if a partner were to default or face insolvency. Under certain circumstances, the firm could find itself unable to retrieve Bitcoin committed through unsecured agreements. The company also intends to allocate additional resources toward Truth Social, Truth+ and other media initiatives as part of a wider adjustment in capital deployment.
