CFTC Grants Coinbase Authorization to Operate Derivatives Clearing Facility

Coinbase follows in Kraken's footsteps by establishing its own US derivatives clearing infrastructure, following Kraken's parent company's May acquisition of Bitnomial along with its CFTC-regulated trading platform, clearing operations and brokerage services.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has granted Coinbase authorization to operate Coinbase Clearing LLC, marking the company's entry into US-based derivatives clearing operations.

Effective Monday, the registration allows the clearing facility to handle fully collateralized futures, futures options and swaps transactions, although leveraged product clearing remains outside the scope of this authorization.

"Today's CFTC approval completes Coinbase's end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement," said Molly Abraham, Coinbase's general counsel.

This authorization provides Coinbase with oversight of an additional critical component of its derivatives operations, complementing its current futures brokerage, Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., and trading platform, Coinbase Derivatives LLC. The development represents a further milestone in Coinbase's transformation from a cryptocurrency exchange into a comprehensive financial market infrastructure provider.

In derivatives transactions, a clearing organization functions as an intermediary positioned between buyers and sellers, facilitating settlement processes and mitigating counterparty risk, particularly in situations involving participant defaults. Coinbase's derivatives trading platform offers US-regulated futures contracts linked to digital assets including Bitcoin and Ether, in addition to commodity and equity-index futures contracts. The platform additionally supports long-dated crypto futures with perpetual characteristics.

The trend toward internalized US derivatives infrastructure has attracted other cryptocurrency firms as well. In May, Payward, the parent entity of Kraken, finalized its purchase of Bitnomial, thereby obtaining a CFTC-regulated trading platform, clearing organization and futures brokerage operation.
