BTC retreats to $78.4K following Fed Chair Warsh's cautious stance on inflation data

The cryptocurrency struggled to maintain momentum above $80,000 following Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's address at Jackson Hole, where he expressed skepticism about recent favorable inflation indicators.

Bitcoin (BTC) experienced significant price fluctuations following the opening of Friday's Wall Street trading session as market participants responded to Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's statements regarding the direction of monetary policy going forward.

Key points:

  • The leading cryptocurrency experienced an initial decline as Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh delivered his Jackson Hole keynote address, later stabilizing around the $79,500 level.
  • According to Warsh, recent declines in PCE and CPI readings do not indicate a fundamental shift in inflationary pressures.
  • Sustaining BTC price levels above $83,000 will depend on Bitcoin derivatives market activity, according to market analysis.

Warsh: Inflation trajectory has not "meaningfully improved"

Information from TradingView indicated BTC/USD reached a low of $78,442 on the Bitstamp exchange amid choppy market conditions, representing approximately a 1% decline at the time of writing.

During his inaugural keynote address at the yearly Jackson Hole Symposium, Warsh struck a warning tone regarding inflation while reaffirming the Federal Reserve's commitment to achieving its 2% inflation target. The central bank leader reinforced his previous commitment to curtailing the amount of forward-looking policy signals the Fed provides to financial markets, eschewing forward guidance entirely and declaring it would not return as a policy tool in the coming period.

"Forward guidance as a regular practice was adopted by my colleagues and me during the Global Financial Crisis. It was essential at the time, and we introduced it with much fanfare. But, as with other legacies of crises past, I believe that the practice has overstayed its welcome," he stated.

The Fed chair went on to reject the notion that recent below-forecast inflation figures in both the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index represented evidence of a sustained downward trajectory in price pressures.

"Each of these broad inflation measures have fallen significantly from their highs of a few years ago, but progress through the past couple of years has been more modest, and while this summer's PCE and CPI readings were better than expected, they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved," he continued.

Equity markets in the United States managed to sidestep negative territory in response to Warsh's remarks, which also featured positive commentary on corporate earnings and expansion in the artificial intelligence industry. The S&P 500 index along with the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index both registered gains of approximately 0.5% at the time of writing.

Analysis stresses derivatives' role in further BTC price gains

Bitcoin's price movement therefore remained confined to oscillations near the $80,000 threshold, trading within a tight intraday band as the August monthly closing period approached.

In earlier coverage, Cointelegraph highlighted market expectations surrounding the monthly candle close, with technical analysis suggesting that BTC/USD must successfully breach a descending trend line while maintaining support at the 50-week exponential moving average positioned near $77,250 to preserve bullish momentum.

Blockchain data further highlighted a substantial zone of selling pressure extending from current spot prices to the $86,000 level, creating headwinds for upward price movement.

In its most recent market assessment, digital asset trading firm QCP Capital contended that even in the event of a price breakout to the upside, the derivatives sector would need to offer appropriate backing by maintaining both funding rates and open interest expansion at moderate levels.

"If price continues higher while funding remains contained and open interest rebuilds gradually, that would indicate a different market structure from one where leverage accelerates rapidly alongside price," QCP Capital wrote, adding:

"The key distinction is therefore not simply whether BTC trades above or below $83.3k, but whether subsequent price action continues to be supported by spot participation or becomes increasingly driven by leveraged positioning."

As of the time of writing, the BTC/USD trading pair had climbed 26.35% during the current month, according to figures from CoinGlass, representing Bitcoin's strongest August showing since 2017.
