Banking Access for Cryptocurrency Companies Under Parliamentary Scrutiny in UK

UK lawmakers initiate investigation examining how banking limitations affect cryptocurrency businesses and individual users, with focus on competitive markets and investment opportunities.

A parliamentary organization in the United Kingdom has initiated an investigation to determine whether cryptocurrency companies and individual users are encountering obstacles when attempting to access banking services, which includes challenges related to opening accounts and limitations placed on transactions involving cryptocurrencies.

The Crypto and Digital Assets All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) announced on Monday that its investigation would focus on understanding how such banking limitations influence investment opportunities, market competition and overall economic development. The parliamentary group indicated it would evaluate whether such restrictions represent a proportionate response.

The group has opened submissions in written format from financial institutions, companies providing payment services, cryptocurrency businesses and additional interested parties until Aug. 31, following which it intends to release its conclusions and recommendations to the public.

A survey conducted in January by the UK Cryptoasset Business Council revealed that 10 cryptocurrency exchanges reported that financial institutions either blocked outright or caused delays for 40% of transactions directed toward crypto platforms. The survey data showed that 70% of those who participated indicated the banking restrictions had diminished their interest in investing, expanding operations or bringing on new employees within the UK.

This investigation arrives at a time when the Financial Conduct Authority is preparing to begin receiving authorization applications from cryptocurrency companies on Sept. 30.
