Anthropic establishes political action committee as AI policy conflicts with Trump White House escalate

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic creates a PAC funded by employees as it navigates questions about political neutrality and an escalating conflict with the Defense Department regarding AI applications.

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic has established a corporate political action committee (PAC), making its entry into electoral financing at a time when discussions surrounding AI policy are growing more heated within Washington, D.C.

On Friday, the company submitted a statement of organization to the Federal Election Commission for the purpose of creating "AnthroPAC," which represents an employee-funded PAC designed to gather voluntary donations from its workforce. According to the filing, Anthropic is identified as the "connected organization," while the committee has been set up as a "separate segregated fund" and is documented as a PAC affiliated with lobbying activities.

According to federal regulations in the United States, contributions from individuals are limited to $5,000 for each election cycle per candidate and are required to be made public via official filings.

According to Anthropic, the PAC will likely provide support to candidates representing both of the nation's major political parties. That said, certain observers have raised concerns about whether this initiative will maintain genuine political neutrality.

Anthropic enters dispute with Pentagon regarding AI applications in weaponry

This development arrives at a moment when Anthropic is experiencing increasing tensions with the Pentagon concerning the deployment of its AI technologies. During February, the Defense Department labeled the company as a supply chain risk following its opposition to deploying its technology for fully autonomous weapon systems and widespread surveillance operations.

Anthropic has taken legal action to contest that classification, maintaining that it represents retaliation for what the company characterized as a protected perspective. A federal judge based in California has issued a temporary injunction against the measure and halted wider restrictions connected to the ongoing dispute.

The company has demonstrated prior involvement in political financing during this election cycle, which includes a $20 million donation to Public First Action, an organization dedicated to promoting AI safety initiatives.
