US Regulator Schedules September Roundtable to Discuss Around-the-Clock Stock Market Trading

A roundtable discussion on round-the-clock equity trading in the United States will be convened by the SEC in September, amid a worldwide push by exchanges to expand their operating hours.

A public roundtable focused on the transition to around-the-clock trading in American equity markets will be convened by the US Securities and Exchange Commission this September.

"We are moving towards a new day – and night – in the US equity markets," SEC Chair Paul Atkins said on Thursday.

"With the expansion to overnight trading, I'm excited at the prospect of US equity markets aligning with those markets that already trade continuously."

Scheduled for Sept. 17 at the SEC's Washington, DC headquarters, the roundtable will feature discussions encompassing preparations necessary for supporting overnight trading, as well as operations and resiliency considerations in a market that operates 24 hours a day, according to the regulator.

This roundtable discussion arrives at a time when an increasing number of international exchanges are either offering or developing plans for nearly continuous trading, providing individual investors with access to the kind of always-available trading that has long been a hallmark of cryptocurrency exchanges.

The London Stock Exchange is reportedly planning to launch a night-time trading venue in early 2027.

In March, Nasdaq said it had begun engaging with US regulators about providing 24-hour trading five days a week on its stock market, aiming to launch in the second half of 2026, pending "regulatory approval and alignment."
