RWA Perpetual Futures Trading Volume Approaches Bitcoin Levels Across Hyperliquid and Binance

Trading volume for RWA perpetual futures climbed to 99.2% of Bitcoin perpetual futures volume across Hyperliquid and Binance platforms, driven primarily by tokenized equity products.

Trading activity for perpetual futures contracts linked to tokenized commodities and stocks has reached levels nearly matching Bitcoin perpetuals across two of the biggest platforms offering these products during the previous week, data from Talos indicates.

Aggregate trading volume spanning seven days across monitored real-world asset (RWA) perpetuals hit $61.7 billion, representing 99.2% of Bitcoin perpetual futures volume recorded on Binance and Hyperliquid, the primary hubs for such trading activity, according to information Talos shared with Cointelegraph via email, based on data captured on Thursday.

Contracts based on tokenized equities represented 57.8% of the aggregate volume, with commodities contributing 28.2% to the total.

According to RWA.xyz, the overall value of real-world assets onchain has expanded to approximately $36.8 billion, not including stablecoins. Meanwhile, cryptocurrency trading platforms have broadened their product catalogs beyond traditional cryptocurrencies, progressively adding tokenized commodities and stocks to their listings alongside digital currencies.

During the period spanning July 13 through July 19, Hyperliquid registered $25.1 billion in trading volume for RWA perpetual contracts, surpassing the aggregated volume across all other perpetual product categories available on the exchange.

In an X post published on July 24, Circle co-founder and CEO Jeremy Allaire noted that the expanding RWA trading activity on Hyperliquid indicates crypto markets are transitioning "away from speculating on endogenous digital commodities."

Growth continues into the new week

Preliminary figures for the ongoing week indicate the upward trajectory is persisting. Trading volume for RWA perpetual contracts has already climbed to $37.2 billion, surpassing Bitcoin perpetual volume by approximately 9%, based on data from Talos' dashboard.

Contracts tied to equities represented $22.8 billion of the aggregate figure, with commodities following at $9.1 billion and indexes contributing $4.2 billion. Exchange-traded funds added approximately $338 million, while the remaining portion consisted of foreign exchange, pre-IPO contracts, and other RWA-linked products.

In earlier July statements, Pantera Capital suggested that perpetual futures contracts have the potential to emerge as a prevailing trading vehicle extending beyond the crypto sector, highlighting benefits including around-the-clock trading availability, elimination of contract expiration dates, more straightforward position management, and uninterrupted price discovery mechanisms.

The expansion of Hyperliquid has captured interest from the traditional finance sector. Jeffrey Sprecher, CEO of Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, recently called on regulators to establish a "level playing field" enabling 24/7 blockchain-based perpetual futures trading, contending that legacy market frameworks should not impede the advancement of blockchain-powered trading infrastructure.

Notwithstanding this expansion, RWA perpetual futures continue to represent a comparatively modest portion of the wider cryptocurrency derivatives ecosystem. Data from Talos indicates combined futures trading volume of approximately $821.4 billion throughout the preceding seven days, with monitored RWA perpetual contracts comprising roughly 7.5% of that aggregate figure.
