Porsche shuts down Web3 initiative less than four years after promising 'long-term' commitment

The luxury automaker is shutting down its Web3 initiative and Pioneers Circle community following a dramatic decline in trading volumes for its 911 NFT collection since its initial launch.

The German luxury automaker Porsche has announced it is shutting down its Web3 initiative along with its Pioneers Circle community, just under four years following the debut of its 911 nonfungible token (NFT) collection.

The company announced via a post on X: "Today, we are announcing the conclusion of the Porsche Web3 project and Pioneers Circle." According to Porsche, what started as a technology-focused initiative had grown to encompass community gatherings and various activities both in the digital realm and in-person settings.

The German manufacturer stated that existing Porsche 911 NFTs will stay in the possession of current holders and will continue their existence onchain. The company plans to convert the community's Discord server into a read-only archive format while ceasing active updates to the project's X account.

The NFT collection from Porsche debuted in January 2023 with plans to release 7,500 tokens total, however the company stopped the minting process following backlash regarding pricing structure and insufficient utility, which resulted in a final supply of just 2,363.

At the time Porsche revealed its Web3 strategy in 2022, Lutz Meschke, who served as its deputy chairman at the time, stated that the automaker had committed itself "for the long haul" and highlighted potential applications in the metaverse, purchasing experiences and supply chains.

The level of trading activity has experienced a significant decline since then. Data from OpenSea shows the collection achieved approximately $20 million in all-time trading volume, however only approximately $38,000 in trading occurred over the past year and roughly $2,900 over the past month.
