Intesa Sanpaolo dramatically expands Ethereum staking ETF investment while slashing Bitcoin ETF stake

Intesa Sanpaolo, the leading financial institution in Italy, expanded its staked Ethereum ETF holdings to $7.1 million in Q2 while simultaneously decreasing investments in two Bitcoin spot ETFs.

Italy's premier banking institution, Intesa Sanpaolo, expanded its holdings in an iShares staked Ether exchange-traded fund by three times during the second quarter of the year, while simultaneously scaling back its investment in the iShares spot Bitcoin ETF.

According to a Friday submission to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the financial institution disclosed ownership of 349,600 shares in the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHB) valued at $7.1 million as of June 30. This represented a substantial increase from the 116,200 shares worth $3.15 million recorded at the conclusion of March.

The bank maintained its position of 3.47 million shares in the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) valued at $67.6 million, representing its most substantial crypto-related investment disclosed in the filing. The number of shares decreased by approximately 4% compared to the first quarter figures.

Intesa Sanpaolo drastically reduced its shareholding in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) by approximately 94%, bringing it down to 40,723 shares from the previous 646,809 shares.

The banking institution maintained its holdings in the Grayscale XRP Trust ETF (GXRP) at the same level of 712,319 shares, nearly doubled its investment in BitGo to 323,000 shares, and decreased its Coinbase shareholding to 7,000 shares.

Exchange-traded funds focused on cryptocurrency provide banking institutions and other institutional market participants with access to digital asset exposure through regulated financial instruments, eliminating the need for direct cryptocurrency custody, compliance obligations, and operational infrastructure typically required when holding digital currencies directly.
