HSBC unveils Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin RedCoin for consumer transactions

The banking giant is introducing RedCoin digital wallets to its PayMe platform users, while preparing for tokenized investment features and future corporate applications.

The banking giant HSBC has introduced RedCoin (RCHKD), its inaugural Hong Kong-dollar-backed stablecoin, enabling users to conduct transfers and make merchant purchases via the PayMe application.

The stablecoin wallet activation feature will become available to PayMe's user base of over 3.3 million people within the next several days, according to the bank's Friday announcement.

The stablecoin operates on a one-to-one redemption model with the Hong Kong dollar. Custodial services for RedCoin are handled by HSBC Digital Assets Custody.

This retail launch comes after Anchorpoint introduced its HKDAP stablecoin via HashKey Exchange in August, a deployment that was initially focused on qualifying institutional entities and professional investors.

In April, HSBC obtained its stablecoin issuer license, together with Anchorpoint Financial, a collaborative venture supported by Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands and HKT. These two entities became the inaugural companies to receive approval under Hong Kong's stablecoin regulatory framework.

The bank also intends to broaden RedCoin's use cases to include wholesale corporate and institutional applications.
