Cryptocurrency Political Group Injects Additional $1M Into Michigan Congressional Contest
The reelection campaign of Michigan Representative Shri Thanedar faces heightened cryptocurrency focus as an industry-backed political action committee floods the Democratic primary with advertising dollars.
A political action committee (PAC) affiliate that receives substantial funding from digital currency firms Ripple Labs and Coinbase has injected additional resources into advertising campaigns for the upcoming primary election in Michigan's 13th Congressional District.
Based on Federal Election Commission (FEC) documentation filed through Thursday, the Protect Progress PAC has invested over $2 million combined on media expenditures backing Michigan Representative Shri Thanedar's campaign in the 13th district while simultaneously working to undermine his Democratic opponent, Donavan McKinney.
The latest FEC submissions essentially doubled the PAC's previously reported expenditures from the week before, allocating an additional $884,240 toward pro-Thanedar advertisements and exceeding $150,000 on efforts opposing McKinney.
Responding to the PAC financial support for Thanedar in a July 21 statement, McKinney asserted that "the crypto lobby is paying my opponent back for helping Trump make over $1 billion since taking office." His remarks appeared to reference the disclosure by the US President that he generated more than $1.4 billion through cryptocurrency-related investments during 2025, including proceeds from his memecoin, Official Trump (TRUMP) and via his family's enterprise, World Liberty Financial. Numerous Democrats have criticized Trump for leveraging his office for personal financial gain through legislation such as GENIUS.
Cointelegraph attempted to contact both Thanedar's and McKinney's campaign organizations for commentary on the PAC financial outlays but had not received a response at the time of publication.
Protect Progress operates as an affiliate organization of the Fairshake PAC, which deployed over $170 million during the 2024 US election cycle through media campaigns backing candidates the organization deemed supportive of crypto industry-friendly policy positions. While Michigan's primary election is slated for Tuesday, the PAC along with its affiliated organizations have already invested millions of dollars in 2026 electoral contests across Texas, Illinois and additional states.
According to a report issued in June by the US consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen, Fairshake and its associated groups accounted for expenditures exceeding $82 million from the approximately $189 million that cryptocurrency companies had deployed in the 2026 electoral cycle. As of January, Fairshake disclosed maintaining a war chest totaling $193 million.
PAC spending in Washington and Alabama with primaries looming
Beyond the Michigan primary races, the Fairshake-affiliated Defend American Jobs PAC allocated over $65,000 on media expenditures supporting a Republican candidate competing in Washington's 4th congressional district, based on FEC documentation. Washington's primary elections are scheduled to occur on the same date as Michigan's.
Alabama, which has primaries scheduled for Aug. 11, has similarly attracted attention from Fairshake. According to FEC filings, Defend American Jobs dedicated more than $511,000 on media campaigns supporting Jerry Carl Jr., a Republican who served as the representative for the state's 1st congressional district during the period from 2021 to 2025. Of particular note, the former Alabama congressman ranked among the wealthiest members of the state's House delegation, possessing a reported net worth reaching up to $15 million as of 2023.
