Cryptocurrency Exchange Luno Slashes Workforce by One-Fifth Amid Industry-Wide July Downsizing

A growing wave of cryptocurrency sector restructuring in July saw Luno and Gnosis among at least 12 firms announcing workforce reductions.

Digital currency platform Luno is implementing workforce reductions affecting approximately 20% of its employees worldwide as part of an organizational restructuring that emphasizes institutional clientele, financial infrastructure development, and business-to-business service offerings.

A Bloomberg report published Tuesday revealed that Luno's Chief Executive Officer James Lanigan attributed the decision to the company's investments in automation technologies and comprehensive operational enhancements that have altered the resource requirements for conducting business. The exchange will simultaneously reduce expenditures to align with current market dynamics while channeling investments into compliance mechanisms, fundamental infrastructure, and consumer-facing products.

This isn't the first time Luno has implemented significant personnel reductions. The platform eliminated 35% of its workforce in January 2023, impacting close to 330 workers, as disruptions throughout the technology and cryptocurrency industries negatively affected its expansion and income generation.

Established in South Africa and currently under the ownership of Digital Currency Group, Luno provides services to approximately 16 million customers throughout Africa and the Asia-Pacific territories. The platform has diversified its offerings beyond consumer trading to encompass infrastructure solutions and institutional services, which includes delivering cryptocurrency infrastructure capabilities for banking institutions and financial technology companies.

The justification Luno has provided for these workforce reductions mirrors a broader trend across the industry, as multiple cryptocurrency enterprises reference artificial intelligence, automation capabilities, and operational optimization when implementing staff reductions.

Crypto layoffs spread across industry

Employment tracking platform CryptoJobsList documented layoffs or organizational restructurings affecting 12 cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency-related enterprises during July, with publicly disclosed numbers reaching 894 impacted positions. According to CryptoJobsList's tracking data, more than 7,254 announced job eliminations across 47 firms have occurred in 2026, with prevailing market conditions most frequently mentioned as the primary justification.

These statistics function as a general industry benchmark rather than a comprehensive cryptocurrency-exclusive count, given that the data incorporates related financial technology enterprises and shows significant influence from Block's substantial 4,000-employee reduction implemented in February.

In early July, digital wallet provider Exodus revealed intentions to eliminate 25% of its personnel while restructuring operations around a comprehensive card-issuance and stablecoin-payment infrastructure. According to Exodus, this strategic shift has the potential to generate between $10 million and $13 million in yearly operational cost reductions.

On Tuesday, blockchain infrastructure development company Gnosis extended invitations to organizations seeking talent across engineering, product development, design, marketing, developer relations, and customer relations functions to reach out for introductions to former team members impacted by a recent organizational restructuring. The firm announced on July 17 that it had downsized its staff following an evaluation of its consumer-oriented Gnosis App platform.
